Windgällenhütte (2032m)

The Windgällenhütte is located above the beautiful Maderanertal at the foot of the Gross Windgällen. It is an ideal starting point for a variety of alpine hikes and climbs in the region. Besides Gross and Klein Windgällen, the region also provides interesting and well equipped climbing routes on Schwarzberg and Lüthiplatten. At the same time it is a ideal stop on (day) hikes for instance coming from the Golzern cable car or as part of the large Maderaner circle. The highly interesting geology makes the area an ideal study area and offers many options for finding crystals or for discovering caves. Children love the abundance of marmots found around the hut.

The Windgällenhütte was erected in 1906. Since then it had a moving history that involved being destroyed by avalanches, restoration and several renovations and modernisations. On occasion of the 100th anniversary 2006, Walter Märki and Franz Schüle have composed a short history of the hut: Chronik Windgällenhütte AACZ (PDF)

The Windgällenhütte was last renovated in 2015 and now features more spacious dormitories and new duvets. It offers 60 beds, distributed over 2 dormitories and several smaller rooms with 4-6 beds. During the season, usually from end of May until mid-October, a variety of cold and warm dishes and drinks are served during the day and guests staying overnight are treated with a delicious dinner as part of the half-board. In the off-season a small winter room with a stove is available (reservation mandatory!).
